Mr. Yam Karki’s inspirational journey demonstrates his dedication and commitment to positively impacting his hometown Gajurmukhi, IlamNepal and its people. His observation of the changing dynamics in his hamlet, with the youth departing for overseas employment, inspired him to do something to rejuvenate the community and generate chances. Establishing Agro Ilam in 2018 A.D. was a key step toward his goal. Mr. Karki transformed his community into a goat farming hotspot after initially focused on Boer goat farming by importing goats from Africa. This business not only helped him financially, but it also inspired many villages to explore goat rearing as a source of income.
Recognizing the potential of goats’ manure, Mr. Karki sought out additional opportunities and decided to venture into coffee farming. Through extensive research on the land and soil, he determined that Arabica coffee was the most suitable option. He established a coffee nursery and underwent training on coffee farming, subsequently sharing his knowledge with the farmers in his village.
In 2075 B.S., he initiated coffee farming with around fifteen farmers, and since then, the number of families involved has grown to over 300. This development highlights the positive impact Mr. Karki’s efforts have had on the community, creating employment opportunities and enhancing the local economy.
Furthermore, Mr. Karki’s participation in the fellowship program at Nabil School of Social Entrepreneurship in 2022 A.D. provided him with valuable insights and skills on managing a business effectively. This experience likely broadened his perspective and equipped him with additional tools to further develop and expand Agro Ilam.
